Scripture Union Daily Guide 24th July 2024 Outline:

We continue to look at the Jewish celebrations and their significance for us. The feast of Trumpets was a day of solemn rest on which trumpets were blown to assemble the congregation. After the period of exile in the Old Testament, the Book of the Law (Torah) was generally read in public, and the atmosphere was one of celebration and rejoicing. The people were reminded of God’s mercies to them through the covenant which, if obeyed, would sustain them through another year.

The great celebration of the Day of Atonement (vs.26-32, see Leviticus 16:1-34 for the background description). The people prepared for this most important day by “afflicting” themselves by fasting or some other forms of discipline, so it is less of a festival. Its neglect carried with it a severe penalty, even death.

On this day, the high priest made atonement for the sins, accidents and omissions committed during the previous year. Through the blood of the animal sacrifice offered together with the peoples’ penitence, they were reconciled to God. For us, the one atoning act of Christ for the sins of all has made such ceremonies obsolete. We only must respond to Christ’s offer by our dutiful obedience.

The feast of Tabernacles (v.34) is also called the feast of Booths or Ingathering. It reminded them of the journey from Egypt to Canaan. They looked back to God’s protection and guidance in the wilderness, highlighting His mercies in history and asserting His sovereignty over His material creation and His covenant people.

V.43 states additional reason for the feast. What things do we teach our children?

Practice/Word Application
